Jason west,
Alto Clarinet & Bass Clarinet
Jason’s journey with music began at age 11 when he signed up for his small town middle school’s band, with a dream of playing the bassoon.
“We don’t have bassoons. Here’s a French horn,”
He dutifully played horn, and got pretty good at it. Then a classmate sold him a clarinet for $30—paid for with birthday money, having just turned 14. By his senior year of high school, he was leading the clarinet section (after putting his poor band directors through a lot)!
It was only natural that he started college as a music major at Texas State University, studying with Dr. David Pino. Two years in, Jason got distracted by some really cool digital maps in the Liberal Arts building. Before he knew it he’d graduated with a B.S. in Geography/GIS. Twenty-four years later he continues work in the geospatial data field.
As his career/life moved him from Austin to Houston and finally back home to San Antonio, Jason has been an active clarinetist, performing with multiple community bands and clarinet/woodwind ensembles across Texas over the years.
